It seems that the second we enter this world we start getting the question, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” This is a question that I dreaded as a kid and I don’t think I am alone in that feeling. No matter how you answer this question people are always going to give their opinion, good or bad. Adolescence is a time where you are very vulnerable and are able to be swayed one way or another very easily. It is important to develop a strong sense of who you are and what you want out of life in order to stay on a successful path, but you also want to be open to hearing about alternative possibilities that you may not be aware of, it is a very fine line and can be hard to navigate.

Since everybody asks the question “what do you want to be when you grow up” it leads kids to believe they can only be one thing and that growing up is a finite concept. In reality you can do many things and your career interests can change as you grow older. Research has shown that on average people change their careers 5-7 times during their working life. Therefore you don’t have to narrow your options down to one choice, by doing this you might actually limit your possibilities. It is good to have many different interests and pathways. Did you know you can actually combine your interests into a few different pathways to get the most out of your experience?
