Rethinking the Admissions Process

We have all heard how cumbersome and labor intensive the college application process can be for students. What about doing things backwards and have colleges offer a spot to students before they even apply? This is what the state of Idaho decided to do. They used data matching between high schools and colleges to pair each student up with a college. Students were then sent a letter asking them to complete a short form to accept their spot (www.chronicle.com).

After working in education for 16 years I have seen many students who don’t have the confidence to apply to college, let alone attend. Most students don’t realize it but there is a college for everybody, regardless of your GPA or financial status. I believe this direct admissions process will give the confidence booster students need to take that next step. But once a student is admitted it is important to put support in place to help them succeed, such as financial aid and fee waivers.

If you have seen a college application you probably noticed that it can be very tedious and it seems a lot of the information you have to fill out should easily be able to transfer in from another platform. With technology where it is today, it seems cumbersome that we would have to fill out this basic information. Why can’t there be a system that automatically tracks this information for students and pairs them up with colleges that would be a good fit? There is a good fit out there for everyone and it shouldn’t be so challenging to find it!
