Make the Most of your Winter Break

If you are a senior in high school it might be hard to believe that half of your senior year is behind you.  If you think the first half went quick, you won’t believe how quick the second half will go.  In order to finish your senior year strong there are a few things you can do over winter break to help ease up your stress levels and make the most of your senior year.

Academic and Financial Planning:

  • Finalize College Applications: At this time you should have a good list of colleges you would like to apply to.  Now is the time to complete and submit any applications you have remaining. Double-check that you have everything needed to complete the application process (essays, personal statements, letters of recommendation, etc.)

  • Prepare for Standardized Tests: If you plan on taking (or retaking) the SAT or the ACT, dedicate some time to study and practice.  You can use a variety of online resources or even hire a tutor.

  • Research Financial Aid: Do you know how you are going to pay for college?  Now is the time to explore scholarships, grants, and work study opportunities. Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and other necessary financial aid forms.

  • Create a College Budget: Estimate your college costs, this includes tuition, fees, housing, and living expenses.

Personal Development and Exploration:

  • Visit Colleges: If your schedule allows, visit different college campuses to get a firsthand look at potential schools. Talk to current students and faculty to gain insights into campus life and academic programs.

  • Volunteer or Intern:  Now is a great time to give back to your community, it not only makes you feel good about yourself but looks great on your resume. You can gain valuable work experience which can enhance our college applications.

  • Relax and Recharge: Please don’t forget to take time for yourself to relax and unwind. You could spend time with your family and friends, read a good book, or pursue hobbies.

Additional Tips:

  • Stay Organized: Be sure to keep track of important deadlines, documents, and correspondence. Use a planner or digital calendar to manage your time effectively, this is a life long skill that will greatly help you navigate life with as little stress as possible.

  • Network: Connect with alumni, mentors and professionals in your desired field. This can provide you valuable advice and opportunities; sometimes it is about who you know.

  • Practice Self-Care: Prioritize your mental and physical health. Be sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy, and exercise regularly.

By utilizing your winter break wisely, you can significantly advance your post-secondary plans and set yourself up for a successful future.  If you need help with any of the tips above feel free to reach out to me at info@atozeducationalconsulting.com or 612.735.1261.
