How the Pandemic Has Changed Higher Education

It is no surprise that the pandemic has affected the academic performance of students. This struggle is the result of obstacles faced by both students and faculty members. College instructors had to quickly create their classes so they could be completed virtually, they had to figure out how to fairly assess their students in this new format, and they had to learn to navigate virtual meetings and lectures. Students had to learn how to navigate their academic world and had to deal with heightened anxiety around their health, while struggling to connect with others.

Now that we are over a year into the pandemic, colleges have been able to develop strategies to help students succeed such as, flexible learning options, allowing students to learn from home, and providing virtual academic support. Now that we are going into a new academic year many colleges have purchased more laptops and internet devices for students, they are also providing online mental-health screenings and virtual medical and counseling appointments to help make support for students more readily available; it has been found that students meet with their advisors more regularly when the appointments are virtual (The Chronicle of Higher Education).

As a college student it is important to know that one of the most important things you can do to set yourself up for success is to form deep meaningful relationships with a mentor. Here are a couples ways you can accomplish this:

-Drop by during office hours to discuss a problem or future planning.

-When you see a professor outside of the classroom, have a quick conversation with them.

-Go to the tutoring center and get help with any problem, big or small.

The post-pandemic saying is that we hope everything returns to “normal.” However, I would like to argue we need to embrace a “new normal.” The pandemic has taught us many things and through this process I think supports are more readily available and the flexibility of learning is at our fingertips.
