Financial Obstacles

What happens when you do everything right and run into financial obstacles that derail your post-secondary plans? Unfortunately, this happens to thousands of students every year. Financial issues are the number one reason low-income students drop out of college; and it is often a little expense that most middle income students don’t even think twice about.

There are many colleges and universities that are trying to offset some of these expenses, from paying for transportation for a college visit, paying for hotel stays if needed, or helping incoming freshmen with school and basic living supplies. Some colleges also require students to have a 10-hour-a-week job on campus. This helps the students financially as well as saving the college money on outside hires.

It is important for colleges to realize that if they don’t help disadvantaged students, it not only affects the students but also the community as a whole. If a student from an economically disadvantaged background graduates with a degree, starts making money, buys a house, pays taxes, and contributes to their community, it is life changing not only for the student but for society as a whole.
